Dear readers, due to complications with my website address I’m on the hunt for a new name for girlonwheeels. I’d love any suggestions you might have because I’m stumped, please comment below. Continue reading New Title
Dear readers, exciting news! Girlonwheels is advertised in this month’s newsletter for interchange. Interchange is an nonprofit organization that helps people like me feel included in society. Until earlier this year all my carers were employed by interchange and now they’ve become amazing life long friends. Dear readers, I have been procrastinating about writing this post for a while due to not wanting to share my dark thoughts with the whole entire world but I’m doing it anyway! This week my boyfriend started studying IT at La Trobe University and I’ve had to work through some envy. Before I delve deep into my swampy emotions I want to make very clear that I’m so proud of him and these boastful feelings override any other. I’m not envious of what he’s doing because I want to be studying IT or even be at uni myself. I am … Continue reading Situations Aren’t Worth Comparing
A few days ago I bought a Microsoft Adaptive Xbox Controller and I love it! My boyfriend helped me set it up and turned on the co-pilot function so that we can do things as one. I only currently have a few buttons because for it to be fully functional you have to buy buttons, switches and joysticks separately. So at the moment my boyfriend steers while I jump, run, pick up stuff, talk and occasionally fight with help. Basically I’ve been mostly using it for mischief and annoying my boyfriend which gives me great joy. In the future I’d … Continue reading Microsoft Adaptive Controller
1. Is she a spastic”. An elderly lady stopped my carer and I while we were out shopping one day to ask this question directed at my carer. My carer was horrified and didn’t know what to say. I thought about hamming it up, dribbling on myself and exaggerating my slurring saying “yes, yes I am” but that would have been mean more than funny. Dear readers, please know using words like spastic and retarded to describe someone not stereotypical is really out of date and actually offensive. If you also want to ask a question about me, just ask … Continue reading Three Absurd Things You Should Never Say
Dear readers, the Logies usually aren’t my thing but after stumbling across this video of Dylan Alcott receiving his Logie award I thought I’d better share his great acceptance speech. He’s right, there hasn’t been many people with disabilities in the television industry but recently the number is thankfully growing with shows such as Invictus Games Tonight, The Set, The Undatable, Employable Me and Special. Just to name a few. I would like to not only thank Dylan Alcott and the television industry as a whole for letting society know that people like me are no different and everything is … Continue reading Dylan Alcott’s Acceptance Speech
Dear readers, Let me tell you two things about waiting for public disabled toilets that really get my goat, especially when I’m almost wetting or pooping my paints. To be honest, there’s a lot more than two shitty things about disabled toilets but I cannot be bothered with typing all these down. So, here we are; the two most annoying situations that I commonly encounter. 1. Young teens thinking it’s cool to have sex in the disabled toilets and casually walking out half a hour later. Seriously, did you really have to do it right there and then? If you … Continue reading What’s So Appealing About Disabled Toilets?
